First Piece:
Medium: Voxes, synths, piercing sine waves, assorted drum sounds/percussion, random sound effects, sirens, synth bass, bells.
Melody: Not very melodic / No melody
Harmony: Practically none.
Meter: 70 bpm
Form: Not much structure, goes from series of noises to the other.
Style: Electronic music, unconventional. Musique concrete: a type of music composition that utilizes recorded sounds as raw material. Sounds are often modified through the application of audio effects and tape manipulation techniques, and may be assembled into a form of montage. It can feature sounds derived from recordings of musical instruments, the human voice, and the natural environment as well as those created using synthesizers and computer-based digital signal processing. Compositions in this idiom are not restricted to the normal musical rules of melody, harmony, rhythm, metre, and so on. It exploits acousmatic listening, meaning sound identities can often be intentionally obscured or appear unconnected to their source (Wikipedia)
Context: Written for development of Philips Pavilion in 1958. The composer wanted to create a piece using noises that are not traditionally considered musical.
Vocal/Expression: Screams, use of voxes (short vocal phrases)/ that has alto voices
Texture: Lots of different noises.
Juan Atkins - Techno Music
Medium: Synths, synth bass, digitally processed vocals, kick, hi hats, open hats, snare, clap, rimshot. Digital audio workstations (DAWs).
Melody: Various beats and sounds overlapping, syncopation (offbeat) and repetition.
Harmony: Drum beat, harmony between synthesizer sounds. Use of synth drone.
Meter: Uptempo, 4/4 time, 120 (?) BPM, strong drum beat.
Form: 3 repeated 2 measure sections, binary or ternary form.
Style: Techno: Genre of electronic dance music, futuristic. Influenced by funk music, cybotron, metroplex, and disco.
Context: Trying to get people to dance.
Vocal/Expression: Male robot-like vocals, repeated words “techno music.”
Texture: Homophonic, one melodic voice prominent over accompanying lines or voices.
Bill Evans Trio- Emily
Medium: Piano, double bass, drummer (uses shaker).
Melody: Major key, carried by piano and bass.
Harmony: Trio all playing at once, but carried at piano and bass. Bass provides rhythmic and harmonic foundation for the piece.
Meter: 133 bpm in ¾ time, swing or jazz waltz.
Form: 3 different sections?
Style: JAZZ, swing feel.
Context: Film music, composed by the Bill Evans Trio for the film “Emily.”
